How to stain a
deck with Messmer's tintable Decking Stain
|
 |
|
Exterior wood
decks are a challenging environment for coatings. They're walked on,
rained on, snowed on, and take more abuse than other exterior wood
surfaces. To protect your deck, you need a tough, durable finish that
lasts. Our tintable Decking Stain is an excellent choice. |

Do not begin
until you have read and understand all instructions. If
you have questions, call us toll free at 1-800-731-3669, weekdays 8-5
Mountain time. Do not apply if rain is expected within 48 hours. In
certain climates you may have to wait for a different time of year to
do this. We recommend doing a small test area on your project to insure
your satisfaction with color choice and appearance before proceeding
with the entire job. Tintable bases must be tinted by a dealer using an
approved colorant system.
Clean
the deck:
Sweep excess debris (dirt and leaves) off the deck. Clean the deck with
Messmer's Wood & Deck Cleaner (Part A), or another high quality
wood cleaner of your choice, then rinse thoroughly with clean water.
Make sure the
deck surface is clean, dry and in good condition. Wood must be free of
waxes, oil, or previous water repellent finishes. After precipitation,
you may need to wait
a few days for the wood to completely dry depending on weather
conditions. Cover plants, grass, concrete, trim, and any other areas
you don't want stained.
Apply
the deck stain:
Stir product thoroughly. Make sure that all pigment is mixed evenly
into the stain. Apply one coat of Decking Stain following label
directions.
Work with the grain, applying the product evenly and thinly.
Overapplication can
result in slow drying time.
Clean-up:
Following label directions, dispose of rags and other waste including
roller covers and brushes in a water filled container. Seal the
container and dispose of it properly.

Frequently
Asked Questions
Q: How long will
the product last?
A: Typically Decking Stain needs to be reapplied every two to four
years.
The length of time will vary depending on the deck construction, the
amount of foot traffic on the deck, which direction it faces, and your
local climate, precipitation
and sun intensity.
Q: How do I
apply if the surface has been stained before?
A: Make sure the surface is clean, dry, and free of loose or peeling
previous coating.
If previous coating has peeled or is loose, it must be removed via
sanding or stripping before proceeding.
Clean the surface well and allow to dry, then apply an even coat.
Q: Why is it
important to clean before applying finish to a deck?
A: If you apply stain to a dirty surface, the adhesion and long term
performance of the product will be compromised. By cleaning the wood
with a good quality wood
cleaner like Messmer's Wood and Deck Part A,
you are properly preparing the deck for staining with Messmer's Decking
Stain.

Maintenance
All exterior surfaces collect dirt, dust and contaminants. It is
necessary to clean them periodically to keep them looking good. We
suggest using Messmer's Wood and Deck Part A Wood Cleaner at least
twice a year for periodic maintenance cleaning.
